CAROLINA, Puerto Rico - The 156th Airlift Wing inaugurated a new fitness center Feb. 3 at the Puerto Rico Air National Guard's Muñiz Air Base Logistic Readiness Squadron Building in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

"Our Airmen now have a state of the art facility where they can train on their physical fitness in a professional and supervised environment that will help them achieve a healthier lifestyle and improve their state of readiness," said Lt. Col. Nestor L. Barreto, 156th Maintenance Support Group commander.

"The two-year project originated from a 156th Force Support Squadron 2014 base survey to improve the unit's morale, welfare and recreation, where the primary request from Airmen was to have access to a base gym to work on their physical fitness requirements," said Chief Master Sgt. Neil Larregui, 156th Force Support Squadron superintendent.

Larregui said that the project was a joint effort between the Puerto Rico National Guard and the 156th Airlift Wing Morale Welfare and Recreation Offices, the 156th Mission Support Group's Force Support and Civil Engineering Squadrons and the 156th Communications Flight.

Before work on the $150,000 renovation could begin, the base document depository and the Logistics Readiness Squadron Deployment Control Center and Conference Room had to be relocated to habilitate the necessary space for the fitness center, said Barreto.

Within four months, contractors installed a specialized flooring, mirrors, air-conditioning and conducted renovations to the men's and women's bathrooms/showers to make them compliant with American with Disability Act requirements, he said.

"This is a family oriented fitness facility, said Bibiana Delgado Jimenez, Puerto Rico National Guard fitness facilities manager. "Our certified staff is excited and ready to support our customers with specialized routines and fitness monitoring based on their personal needs."

Delgado described the new fitness center as a high-tech facility equipped with over $100,000 dollars of the latest strength and aerobic gear in the market, and an audiovisual suite that will provide a variety of training options and deliver an interactive and entertaining training experience to their customers.

Fitness Center hours of operation are from Monday to Friday from 5a.m. to 7p.m. and Saturdays from 6a.m. to 12p.m. The use of the fitness center is open to Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard, Puerto Rico State Guard (active status), Retirees and their dependents. Customers must present valid Department of Defense issued ID card to gain access to the facility. Dependents between 13-18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
