AMMAN, Jordan - The integration of Field Artillery in the modern battlespace is a challenging task that requires coordination, communication and understanding. Airspace de-confliction, artillery forward observer location, civilian considerations, and partner nation operations are factors units must consider in the planning process.

Leaders of the 18th Field Artillery Brigade, out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and the 1st Battalion, 182nd Field Artillery Regiment, Michigan National Guard, recently conducted a combined artillery planning seminar with members of the Jordanian Royal Artillery to increase each nation’s understanding of artillery fire integration into a complicated battlespace, focusing on operations to increase the shared understanding between the two nations.

Colonel John L. Rafferty Jr., the 18th Field Artillery Brigade commander, said the seminar was a logical progression through warfighting functions, leading towards combined arms operations.

“This was a very effective seminar because it is the third time we’ve had the same group of leaders together,” said Colonel Rafferty. “We trust each other, and trust is the basis of interoperability.”

U.S. and Jordanian artillery leaders shared operational practices, ideas and lessons-learned in the seminar. Topics of discussion ranged from cannon operations and fire-mission processing to understanding the requirements for accurate fire and radar employment.
Jordanian leadership also shared their knowledge of artillery tactics to increase US understanding of artillery operations.

“Seminars between partner nations set conditions for improved combined training and live fire exercises,” Rafferty added. “Then commanders will have the confidence to maximize artillery employment against enemy forces.”

Following the seminar, 18th Field Artillery Brigade leadership participated in a fellowship lunch of mansaf, a traditional Jordanian cuisine consisting of lamb, rice and yogurt typically eaten with one’s hands.

The 18th Field Artillery Brigade and the 1st Battalion, 182nd Field Artillery Regiment are both deployed in South West Asia in support of U.S. Army Central Command.
