MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. - The Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter visited Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, Feb. 3.
The Honorable Mr. Carter spent the visit exploring different aircraft and talking to service members about the future of the military.
“We have the finest fighting force the world has ever known,” said Carter. “It’s important for that to be true, not only today, but tomorrow and 20 years from now. That’s why investing in people is so vital, so the people who come after you are just as good as you are.”
After his talk, Carter answered questions from service members and talked about his recent decision involving women in combat military occupational specialties.
“The basic reason for that is simple. For us to have the best in the future, we need to be able to reach into the largest pool of people we can and women make up half of our country,” explained Carter. “They have to be qualified and they have to meet standards, but I want to be able to reach into all parts of our population.”
After the questions, Carter handed out challenge coins to the service members and thanked them for their dedication to duty.
“The main thing I want you to know is how incredibly proud I am of you,” said Carter. “You are what I wake up for every day, and I couldn’t thank you enough.”
