CLOVIS, N.M. - The 27th Special Operations Group was awarded the 2015 Aviation Resource Management Team of the Year for Air Force Special Operations Command for the seventh consecutive year.

With approximately 60 Airmen spread across the 27th Special Operations Support Squadron, 16th SOS, 318th SOS, 9th SOS, 12th SOS, 524th SOS, 551st SOS, 33rd SOS, 3rd SOS, and two tenant units, winning the prestigious large unit award is a testament to the ARM element’s ability to execute a focused mission from geographically separated units.

“When you think ARM, you should be thinking about aircrew and operations,” said Senior Master Sgt. James Knox, 27th SOSS Host Aviation Resource Management chief. “In the 27th SOSS, the HARM element tracks incentive pay and aeronautical orders for flyers, we manage physicals and work with finance and agencies within the medical group [27th Special Operations Medical Group].”

“Members of the Squadron Aviation Resource Management team deal more directly with the flyers on a day-to-day basis,” Knox continued. “The SARM element tracks training and validates information we enter into the Aviation Resource Management System to assist in ensuring aircrew are cleared to fly.”

An ARM Airman imbedded within the 33rd SOS, Airman 1st Class Jessica Sullivan has worked closely with members of the Remotely Piloted Aircraft community for nearly three years.

“I love what I do,” Sullivan said. “Having worked with the 33rd SOS for several years, I’ve developed an in-depth understanding of the aircraft and its relevance to the mission, as well as cultivated a rapport with the team I support.”

In order to continually expand the knowledge base of ARM members, Airmen are rotated between squadrons every few years. The change of personnel, aircraft and mission set affiliated with each squadron allows Cannon’s ARM team to be well-versed in many aspects of the wing’s operational mission.

“When I arrived at Cannon I was assigned to the 27th SOSS,” Sullivan said. “I extended my time with the 33rd SOS beyond the average two years because I enjoyed the mission and the people, but in the coming months I will move on to the 16th SOS. Every squadron is different and there is a learning curve when you attach to a new one. For the first couple of weeks my priority is to become familiar with the aircraft and the mission; it’s an experience that is both challenging and exciting for most ARM members, but makes us well-rounded.”

In addition to the robust training members of the ARM team receive, Knox attributes their many successes to the people.

“We’ve been lucky to receive very high-quality airmen and supervisors here,” he said. “I believe it’s all intrinsic; the desire to excel has to be within you. Naturally, there are growing pains here and there, but our excellent leadership works to curtail that learning curve and mold the team into the highly-functioning group it is today. Our long-running success boils down to consistency and transparency. I believe we continually move closer to perfecting the recipe for success.”

Having won the large unit award at the AFSOC level, Cannon’s ARM team is now competing against other major command winners for the Air Force title, a crown the 27th SOG has claimed three times before.

“When people ask us how we are able to win year after year the answer, for me, is simple,” Knox said. “You will never meet a team more fired up than the one we have here. They love what they do and they are committed to being the best at what they do.”
