CHICAGO - Defense Contract Management Agency team members here recently partnered with a local charity in Schaumburg to package meals for hungry children around the world. Fourteen Central Regional Command, Chicago and operations/center employees volunteered two hours of personal time for the event, which was organized by the DCMA Chicago Employee Activity Committee — commonly known as EAC.

“I believe it is important to support initiatives that enrich the lives of our employees both personally and professionally,” said Army Col. D. D. Mayfield, DCMA Chicago commander. “During community outreach activities, employees have the opportunity to share their talents working on projects that benefit the community at large. We are not just a great (Department of Defense) organization; we are a caring organization as well.”

The agency team members helped provide nutritional meals for starving and malnourished people. The prepackaged dry meals — costing less than a quarter each to prepare — are funded and assembled by donor-volunteers. The packing session attended by the agency team resulted in assembling 91 boxes — or 19,656 total meals — destined for distribution in Africa.

Chicago’s EAC is organizing to become an employee resource group, with a more formalized structure — to focus on recruitment, professional development, wellness and community service. In addition to this community service event, the committee has already organized a fund drive for military care packages, coordinated fitness events and planned the agency’s Chicago-area holiday party.

“I encourage participation in the Employee Activity Committee to enhance employee morale,” Mayfield said. “The activities of the committee provide cross-functional interaction for social gatherings, professional development, health and wellness, and community service.”

The EAC, which currently consists of 10 members, has plans for an expanded repertoire of events in 2016 with a focus on building morale, improving physical and mental fitness, and building cohesiveness across functional teams. Highlights of the 2016 program include a winter walking program, a 5K fun run and walk, onsite yoga classes, professional development guest speakers, recruitment fairs, and quarterly community service events.
