CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Boaters and fishermen are advised to use caution near the shoreline of K-2 ranges on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

More than 50 signs have been placed along the banks to warn of the potential dangers of unexploded ordnance in the waters near the edge of the river.

While it has been several decades since the Marine Corps used ranges that fired across the river, a survey from 2012 to 2014 showed unexploded ordnance in the river bed, said Chip Olmstead, deputy director range and training area management, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

"We cannot restrict these waters," said Olmstead. "But we have an obligation to protect the public, and we want people to know that if you participate in bottom disturbing activities, it could be hazardous to your health."

The Marine Corps has contracted further testing to be completed before a decision will be made regarding the potential disposal of the items, said Olmstead.

In addition, a town hall meeting will be held Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. at the Sneads Ferry Community Center in order to determine the impact on the local public.

The local public will have access to more information regarding the studies and will be able to discuss the issue with base officials.
