SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. - Maj. Gen. Susan A. Davidson and Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin McKeller, SDDC’s commanding general and command sergeant major, unveiled the SDDC 50th anniversary time capsule in its permanent location during a ceremony held Jan. 21 at the SDDC Headquarters building.

The time capsule, part of the command’s year-long 50th anniversary celebration, will serve as a long-term symbol recognizing SDDC’s celebration of 50 years as an Army command.

“Our organization officially came into being as an Army command on 15 Feb., 1965,” noted Dr. Kent Beck, SDDC’s command historian.

The time capsule, a banded and locked Army issued foot locker, is scheduled to be opened in 2025, during the command’s 60th anniversary.

Planning for the time capsule started months ago, said Beck. “We canvassed all of SDDC’s subordinate units and headquarters directorates for items to include in the capsule that were representative of today’s SDDC,” he said.

In December, during the command’s Holiday Party, members of the SDDC command team placed the final items into the capsule and it was sealed.

“The time capsule contains various items, from coins, pictures, and tee shirts to briefings and other artifacts, all selected to provide the future SDDC Team of 2025 with a better idea of what SDDC was like 10 years prior, in 2015,” said Davidson during the ceremony.

According to Davidson, the time capsule serves two functions. “The items within the time capsule will provide the SDDC of 2025 with greater insight into the command’s legacy, mission and activities as they are now in 2015,” she said. “Secondly, it provides a challenge for them to continue our legacy of outstanding Warfighter support through their future efforts in the year 2025 and beyond.

The time capsule unveiling is one event held during the year-long 50th Anniversary celebration that will officially end Feb. 16 during SDDC’s second annual Global Deployment & Distribution Excellence Awards luncheon.
