FORT BLISS, Texas - Remembered for his passionate advocacy for racial equality, the life of Martin Luther King Jr. was celebrated by Fort Bliss Soldiers Jan. 19 at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center, Fort Bliss, Texas.

“The importance of observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day is to ensure the memory of those who have contributed to this great nation is not forgotten,” said Master Sgt. Ontika R. Fudge-Jackson, senior equal opportunity adviser, 1st A.D. and Fort Bliss. “As we continue to combat inequality, it is important to highlight our past as we move into our future.”

Hosted by the 1st Armored Division Artillery, the ceremony commenced with the performance of the national anthem by Spc. Joseph Leveston, vocalist with the 1st A.D. Band.

Guest speaker Dr. Sandra E. Braham, chief executive officer of the Young Women’s Christian Association El Paso del Norte Region, spoke upon the current state of King’s dream.

“I think each of you here today will agree that we have work to do,” Braham said. “We have not arrived and, when we look at the state of our nation, the state of relationships, and the state of our children of all races, we are concerned. And rightfully so. We have work to do, and we won’t get there alone.”

Braham stressed the importance of unity in continuing the fight for freedom and justice for all Americans.

“We have work to do and you, our military leaders, have a role to play,” Braham said. “You have been fortunate to have exposure and interaction with people from diverse backgrounds. Seek to learn and understand more ... Give hope to your children and your neighbor’s children. Let’s not further defer Dr. King’s dream.”

Ret. Sgt. Maj. Don Troxler recited King’s “I Have a Dream” speech originally delivered Aug. 28, 1963. King's words echoed loudly throughout the crowded ceremony.
