SASEBO, Japan – Commander, Amphibious Force U.S. 7th Fleet, Rear Adm. John B. Nowell, visited the amphibious transport dock ship USS Green Bay (LPD 20), Jan. 15.

Nowell visited Green Bay to meet with Green Bay’s Sailors and assess the progress of maintenance during Green Bay’s Selective Restricted Availability (SRA).

“The ship looks great,” said Nowell. “I know you all are eager to get the ship underway in the summer. Being in the shipyards isn’t easy, but you’re getting it done and doing a superb job.”

Nowell came to Sasebo from Okinawa, Japan, to execute a commander’s conference with ships and Expeditionary Strike Group 7/Task Force 76 units.

“It’s important that I visit with the ships in the strike group in order to feel the pulse of operations at a deckplate level,” said Nowell. “Meeting the commanding officers and command master chiefs is only the first step.”

Shortly after his arrival aboard Green Bay, Nowell held an all hands call in the ship’s Hangar Bay to talk to the crew about the strike group and its future.

“[Japan] is a crucial location in today’s Navy, especially taking into consideration this very pivotal time with what’s been going on in the area,” said Nowell. “We will continue to collectively work with our partners, Japan, Korea and the Philippines, in order to conduct joint operations and also help build up their amphibious force.”

Nowell also ate lunch with Green Bay Sailors on the ship’s Mess Deck.

“There are some great Sailors on the Green Bay,” said Nowell. “When I was eating lunch with them, they asked me some very hard-hitting questions. These Sailors are extremely knowledgeable about the ship and the strike group’s mission.”

Expeditionary Strike Group 7/Task Force 76 is the Navy's only forward deployed amphibious force and is headquartered at White Beach Naval Facility, Okinawa, Japan, with an operating detachment in Sasebo, Japan.

Nowell, along with his staff, deployed with USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), USS Germantown (LSD 42) and USS Ashland (LSD 48) Jan. 18.

Green Bay is assigned to the Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group and is currently in an SRA in Sasebo, Japan.
