SASEBO, Japan -- Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 3, conducted an official reopening ceremony of the Seabee Battalions’ Detail at Commander, Fleet Activities Sasebo (CFAS), Japan, Dec. 18.

At the end of July 2013, members of NMCB 5 closed down the Seabee Battalions’ Detail after completing their tasking at CFAS. It marked the end of more than 30 years of deployments to Sasebo for the Naval Construction Force.

After two years, the Battalions have been called back to continue supporting the Seventh Fleet operations in Sasebo. NMCB 3 arrived at CFAS in September 2015, for a six-month deployment where they began supporting base operational readiness, performing facility upgrades and installation projects.

The Seven Seabees assigned to NMCB 3 re-established the foundation of the Battalion’s Detail in Sasebo by quickly clearing the old Seabee spaces after it has been turned into a storage facility in 2013. The Detail refurnished the facility back into offices and workshops to use during the deployment and for future deployed Battalions in Sasebo.

After the facility was ready to support the Detail, the Seabee flag was raised marking the official return of the Seabee Battalions’ Detail back in Sasebo.

“Having the Battalions back in Sasebo is important to not only Public Works, but to all of CFAS, said Chief Equipment Operator Matthey Kreamalmyer, Public Works Self Help leading chief petty officer. “They [NMCB] increased our construction capabilities in support of Seventh Fleet and Major Combat Operations Response across the Area of Operation.”

NMCB 3 is homeported in Port Hueneme, California and is currently deployed to Okinawa, Japan. The mission of NMCB 3 is to support Navy and joint forces throughout the U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM) Area of Responsibility through construction projects and humanitarian missions in more than 14 different geographical locations.
