INDIANAPOLIS – Most service members and civilians celebrate Nov. 11 in honor of the sacrifices made by generations of U.S. veterans with time spent with their families, taking part in parades and cook outs. Soldiers like Army Reserve Sgt. Lynnuelle S. Long celebrated this Veterans Day volunteering their time for others.
Long volunteered her Veterans Day holiday with disabled veterans at the Richard L. Roudebush Veterans Administration Medical Center in Indianapolis to rouse spirits and honor their commitment, service and sacrifice.

“I take it upon myself to volunteer to help. I really care about my veterans, especially my Vietnam Veterans,” continued Long, “and try to go out of my way to show them.”

During the day, she helped some of the staff, shook hands with veterans and assisted them moving around the facility.

Sometimes just talking with veterans makes the most difference.

“Listening shows our veterans that we appreciate them and instills a sense of appreciation in them, especially on veterans Day,” said Long.

“I made a lot of veterans smile and had conversations with a lot of them. You could tell that they appreciated the fact that I came to volunteer my time. They have sacrificed so much for us; they have put in time so that we can wear the uniform,” said Long.

“Its only right that we honor them, even a small token of appreciation, whether it be a salute or giving them a little bit of time,” said Long.

For Long, volunteering is about “giving back,” and living the Army Values.

“When a Soldier volunteers, they are exemplifying our values of Leadership and Selfless Service,” said Long. “We have the responsibility to give some form of selfless service as a Soldier,” continued Long. “If we don’t dedicate that time on Veterans Day, a day honoring sacrifice and service, then we should find a day during the year to dedicate. “
