NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nathan Cary, a cartographic technician, in the Real Estate Division, is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Employee of the Month for November 2015.
Cary is recognized for his significant contributions, extraordinary technical skill and personal initiative in support of the USACE Civil Works Land Data Migration Enterprise Initiative. He linked thousands of files from the district’s real estate maps, deeds, and easements, which will be accessed via the Corps’ Geographic Information Map Viewer.
Mike Abernathy, Nashville District Real Estate Division chief, said Cary’s work saved the Corps more than $50,000 and drastically reduced the estimated time to conduct the migration from 1,500 to 150 man-hours.
“We are glad to have him here. He immediately qualified himself as an asset to our branch and is most deserving of this award because of the initiative, extra effort and the time he put forth to quickly adapt to his new work environment and do his job well,” Abernathy said.
Cary said being recognized for his job is really great but he immediately attributes his success as a team effort from the Real Estate Division for training him and allowing him to be creative.
“This is a great job. I really appreciate Matt Davis, Kathy Keith and Bobby Sells for helping me transition and continuing to work with me,” said Cary. “I love my job, the people and I count it a privilege to receive this award.”
“This is truly impressive,” said Lt. Col. Stephen Murphy, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District commander. “Nathan's process is now being shared across the Corps and will have a nationwide impact in cost and time savings. He made Real Estate-related data searches much easier and more cost effective in the future.”
Cary said that one of the keys to his success was having co-workers and supervisors as mentors and being able to readily adapt to changes by staying consistent.
“It’s good to have co-workers who are professionals and want to see you do good work,” Cary said.
Ashley Klimaszewski, Real Estate Division Management and Disposal Branch chief, said Cary is well-deserving of the award because he worked hard and this project impacts other districts.
“He is very humble, has patience, is a hard worker and has great attention to detail, said Klimaszewski. “Real Estate is very fortunate to have as a part of our team.”
Abernathy added that Cary’s commitment and initiative to the Nashville District’s mission makes him an outstanding employee.
Cary is a native of Bowling Green, Kentucky, and he began working for the Corps in July 2015. He said he loves working with the district’s data and being able to visit projects and meet people that make up the district.
“There is a great sense of pride working with others in the Corps and working for a mission,” Cary said. “I like working with people that enjoy what they do and are willing to improve processes.”
In his off time, Cary lives in a cabin on his farm in rural Scottsville, Kentucky, and enjoys spending time with his girlfriend, Kay, and two dogs.
He said he loves the outdoors, fly fishing in the tail waters of Wolf Creek Dam and spending time with family and friends.
“I love the Cumberland River,” Cary said. “Wade fishing or throwing flies from my drift boat are both fine with me.”
Murphy said Cary’s work in Real Estate is another example of the incredible impact that one employee with initiative, a great idea, and a little hard work can have on the betterment of the Corps.
“One rock makes a lot of ripples,” said Murphy. “Excellence is doing ordinary things extraordinarily well, and Nathan has done just that!”
