CAMP ZAMA, Japan— The Camp Zama Girl Scouting program supports Girl Scouts of all ages living in and around the Camp Zama, Japan community. In addition to offering opportunities for adventure, fun and leadership to the stateside Girl Scout sisters, the Camp Zama Girl Scouting program has a vibrant host-nation program which provides opportunities to make new friends, explore Japan and foster cross-cultural understand.

One cross-cultural tradition of the Camp Zama Girl Scout is to visit the Soyodai Nursing Home each December to spread a little holiday cheer to its many residents.

Over 30 Girl Scouts ranging in ages from 5 – 17, sang Christmas carols in English and Japanese on Dec. 12 to nursing home residents.

The Camp Zama Girl Scouts were joined by their Japanese sister scout troop from Sagamihara to help decorate three Christmas trees, sing carols and give the residents “Girl Scout SWAPS”—Special What-cha-ma-call-its Affectionately Pinned Somewhere.

Nursing home residents also enjoyed instrumental music played by the Cadette, Senior and Ambassador troops.

"This is an event the Girl Scouts have been doing year after year,” said Naomi Conner, Camp Zama Girl Scouts Leader.

“They come into the [nursing] home with enthusiasm, ready to share some holiday cheer, said Conner.

The nursing home staff and residents also gave SWAPS back to the scouts in the form of origami and treats.

“It's what the holiday season is all about,” said Conner.

The Camp Zama Girl Scouts were active for the 2015 holiday season by participating in other multiple community service projects.

They have volunteered at the annual Camp Zama Christmas Around the World event held Dec. 4, provided ornaments to an orphanages in Osaka, Japan and decorated Christmas trees at the Camp Zama and Sagamihara Family Housing Area Libraries.

Later in the December, the scouts participated in a Coat and Blanket Drive, and they helped pass out Christmas cards to Soldiers with assistance from the Camp Zama Red Cross.
