FORT HOOD, Texas– Christmas can be a stressful time of year–especially financially. But the 3rd Cavalry Regiment Association helped take the load off of some troopers plate.

Each basket came complete with a ham, mashed potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, cake mix with icing and much, much more. The boxes contained a holiday meal that can easily feed a family of four.

“My wife and I set this event up through the association,” said retired Command Sgt. Maj. Harvey Reed, the association president. “What I really love about [giving Christmas baskets] is the ability to help Soldiers and their families.”

This year, the association gave 35 baskets to Troopers and their families with the help of several volunteers.

“I’m glad we had so many volunteers to help make this event a success; we’re so lucky to have them.” said Reed.

One of the volunteers, 1st Lt. Laura Schumer, the 3rd Cav. Regt Family Readiness liaison, said she enjoys helping Soldiers and their families because of all of the hardships they endure.

“Being able to give this gift to them and see their faces light up, it means so much to me,” said Schumer.

As the first group of troopers and family members trickled in to the chapel’s break room to receive their baskets, they signed-in and immediately received attention from the volunteers.

“I’ll never get over the joy of helping Soldiers and their families –particularly during the holidays,” said Reed.
