LISBON, N.D. — It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and nowhere was that more true than Monday at the North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon.

Soldiers and Airmen with the North Dakota National Guard visited the home, delivering gifts and sharing a holiday meal with the veterans, in order to demonstrate their appreciation to those whose military service preceded theirs.

Visitors to the home for the outreach event included Maj. Gen. Al Dohrmann, North Dakota adjutant general, and nearly 30 other Guardsmen. Together, Guard members and residents shared a traditional holiday meal and plenty of conversation.

“We’re always appreciative of the opportunity to connect with these true heroes every year,” said Dohrmann. “The holidays are an excellent time to express our gratitude, and we are extremely grateful for all that our veterans have done for this state and nation.”

After the meal, the Guardsmen handed out 143 gifts (one for each veteran) and entertained residents with holiday carols.

This year’s event organizer was Command Sgt. Maj. Brad Heim, state command sergeant major for the North Dakota Army National Guard. It was the first time he planned the event, and he hopes to be able to continue his participation in the future.

“All Military members both past and present look forward to this event every year,” Heim said. “We’re happy to spend quality time visiting with these veterans.”

Annually, the state’s Army and Air National Guard components alternate responsibilities in coordinating the event, which has taken place for more than 20 years thanks to the volunteer efforts and personal donations of the Guard members.

“This outreach event would not have been possible without those people who volunteered their time and efforts to shop for and wrap gifts,” Heim added.
