KEYPORT, Wash. – Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Keyport held their 22nd Annual Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony in Naval Undersea Museum Jack Murdock Auditorium, Dec. 7.
Active duty service members, reservists, five survivors and their family members attended the ceremony in remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
“At the time you didn’t have the opportunity to get scared,” said Bob Rains, a Pearl Harbor survivor. “It was the first action for some Sailors and kind of exciting.”
Capt. Francis Spencer III, NUWC commanding officer and master of ceremonies and Cmdr. Dustin Demorest, NUWC executive officer, narrated through the events of Dec. 7, 1941, for the ceremony.
“With the attack on Pearl Harbor being the start of one of the most significant conflicts in U.S. history, it is important that we remember what happened on that fateful day,” said Spencer. “I believe it’s important to spend time and receive the survivors knowledge and experiences.”
More than 2,000 people lost their lives on that day, changing the way of life for service members and civilians alike. With the loss of the entire U.S. Pacific Fleet, which comprised of eight battleships including the USS Arizona, America learned a huge lesson.
“If we don’t remember where we came from, we are doomed to repeat it,” said Fire Controlman 1st Class Jeremy Tucker, Intermediate Maintenance Facility Bangor. “Pearl Harbor survivors are some of the last historical veterans we have left and to hear their stories and experiences firsthand is a true honor.”
The Intermediate Maintenance Facility, Pacific Northwest Color Guard presented the colors as Navy Band Northwest played the national anthem with the singing of The Keyport Singers.
“This is the sixth year I’ve attended Keyport’s remembrance ceremony and it is nice to see so many people attend and honor what happened,” said Rains. “It is a true honor to be present for the event.”
