    311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

LAS VEGAS – Nevada’s Attorney General Adam Paul Laxalt, during a press conference at the Grant Sawyer State Office Building, Las Vegas, Nevada, announced that a new office, the Office of Military Legal Assistance, was established to help veterans and their families Nov. 19.

This new office will offer free legal civil services to active duty, Army Reserve and National Guard service members, as well as veterans in the state of Nevada. This program will be the nation’s first attorney general led public-private partnership to give our military communities better access to pro bono civil legal services.

Capt. Nic Danna, 650th Regional Support Group deputy command Judge Advocate, and Afghanistan Combat Veteran, was named the Director of the Office of Military Legal Assistance for the Nevada Attorney General’s Office.

“I was honored to take this position because I know that there are veterans and their families that need help when there is a crisis in their lives,” said Danna. “We are already helping veterans and in the coming months and years, we hope that this program will serve as a model for other organizations and states.”

Danna was encouraged by the overwhelming response from more than 100 local attorneys who have pledged their commitment to the Military Legal Assistance’s mission and he has high expectations for his program.

Laxalt formed an advisory committee this last February to shape the parameters of the program. The committee comprised of representatives from the various military communities and partners within Nevada’s statewide legal community included Nevada Brig. Gen. William Burks, Adjutant General. This program became the Nevada AG Office of Military Legal Assistance.

“I am proud to honor these military heroes who have given so much in service to this country and state,” said Laxalt. “This new office is dedicated to addressing the legal gaps in representation for our current military service members.”

Capt. Danna, a graduate of the University of Southern California and Whittier School of Law, has served as a prosecutor and a civil litigator for the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office. There his assignments included a prosecutor in both the general crimes unit and the Safe Neighborhoods Gang Unit, a civil litigator in the police litigation unit, where he defended the Los Angeles Police Department and its officers before returning to criminal prosecution.

Prominent guests included Col. Amy M. Taitano, former 650th Regional Sustainment Group commanding officer, Barbara Cegavske, Nevada Secretary of State, Assemblyman Glen Trowbridge, District No. 37, Assemblyman Chris Edwards, District No. 19, Melanie Kushnir, Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, and Col. Donna Verchio, Staff Judge Advocate U.S. Air Force Warfare Center.

Capt. Danna has been called to active duty numerous times and most recently with the 419th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion in 2014 for a deployment to Afghanistan. Upon his return, he was appointed by Nevada Attorney General Laxalt as the Director of Nevada Attorney General Office of Military Legal Assistance.

In 2011, the 650th RSG was realigned under the 311th Sustainment Command and took control of three battalions: 314th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 469th CSSB and the 483rd Transportation Battalion. Its area of operation spans over three states, including California, Nevada and Arizona.
