FORT BRAGG, N.C. - “We like to dress up and have fun.”

Air Force Staff Sgt. Gladys L. McGowan, a preventative dentistry noncommissioned officer with the 43rd Airlift Group/43rd Medical Squadron, has dressed up and ran in the Operation Toy Trot 5K race for the past three years.

Dressed in green, with a gold star upon her head and a belt made of tinsel, she smiled from ear to ear at the completion of the Toy Trot 5K on Dec. 2, 2015.

“You get to give a gift, help a kid in need, and you get to run,” said McGowan about the event.

The annual Air Force Operation Toy Trot 5K is in conjunction with Operation Toy Drop. Operation Toy Drop is hosted by the U.S. Army Reserve and Civil Affairs & Psychological Operations Command (Airborne).

Toy Trot participants consisted of service members from the Air Force, Army, and allied nations.

“Everybody gets together and has a good time,” said Senior Airman Norman N. Luquias about the event.

Luquias, attached to the 43rd Air Base Squadron, gave the safety briefing at the Toy Trot and motivated participants.

“I like to talk and get people energetic,” said Luquias.

Energetic is one word that also described McGowan and her dental crew whose costumes included Santa, his elves and another Christmas tree.

During the last three years McGowan’s dental flight has won best group costume each year. She said the best benefit from this type of event is camaraderie.

“We have such a good group and such a strong bond because of all the thing that we do together,“ said the 11-year-veteran.

The Toy Trot was not only a great way to give back to the local community through the donations of toys but also a way to foster esprit de corps among service members.
