CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Not everyone can get home for the Thanksgiving holiday. So, in the spirit of being good neighbors, the Havelock Military Affairs Committee has been bringing Thanksgiving to the Marines and Sailors of Marine Transport Squadron 1 for years. They did it again Nov. 25, 2015, with a lunch fit for any family’s table.
“We have adopted VMR-1 as an extended family,” said Stephanie Duncan, director of the Havelock Chamber of Commerce. “For the past four years we have come out and served them a Thanksgiving meal.”
Between the Havelock Chamber of Commerce and the Havelock Military Affairs Committee, the Marines with VMR-1 enjoyed a meal consisting of 11 turkeys, five hams and numerous side dishes.
“I hope they remember how much the community cares about them, and we want them to know we are here for them,” said Duncan.
More than 75 Marines took part in the Thanksgiving feast, giving everyone the chance to experience the Thanksgiving Holiday.
“For the Marines that are not able to go home, this is a great opportunity to feel like part of the family and get a home-cooked meal,” said Lt. Col. Thomas Bedell, commanding officer of VMR-1. “Events like this show the Marines that there are people in the local community who care about them.”
Bedell went on to give a heartfelt thank you to the members who volunteered and wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.
