MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – Marines with 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Combat Camera loaded their Tactical Imagery Production System onto a KC-130J Super Hercules during a loading exercise aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, Nov. 20.

The TIPS is a highly-mobile, rapidly-deployable, self-contained tactical shelter system with imagery and reproduction capabilities that can be used while deployed in austere conditions.

“We could move it into any environment and successfully produce products for the commanding officer,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Wade Spradlin, the 3rd MAW Combat Camera officer-in-charge.

Having the TIPS allows combat camera to be able to go out and produce photographic and video products and broadcast their products through the internet.

This is the first time Marines loaded this version of the TIPS on a Super Hercules. Previous versions of the TIPS were able to go on larger aircraft, but not the KC-130J, according to Spradlin.

“It’s important for us to conduct this exercise so we can determine what is needed to successfully deploy the TIPS,” said Lance Cpl. Jessica Lucio, combat videographer with 3rd MAW.

The process took two days and consisted of Marines taking down a fully operational TIPS, palletizing it, weighing it and loading everything onto the aircraft.

With all the weight and configurations retrieved from the exercise, the information can be sent to other Marine Air Wings along with combat camera offices so they can properly employ the TIPS in the future, according to Spradlin.
