MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan - Marines faced off at the indoor small-arms range during the intramural pistol matches at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, Nov. 16-19, 2015.

Intramural pistol matches are designed to introduce participants to the competition in arms program style of shooting, enabling Marines to compete in a match locally run. This allows more participation and helps identify Marines that may do well at the Far East Division Matches in Okinawa.

“The ultimate goal is to enhance marksmanship in the Marine Corps and to seek out the best shots in the organization to ultimately represent the Corps at higher levels of competition,” said Lt. Col. James S. Whiteker, commanding officer of Marine Wing Support Squadron 171.

Participating in the intramural match provides a foundation for competing at division matches. The top 10 percent of competitors at division matches earn enhanced marksmanship badges that accumulate points toward becoming a distinguished shooter.

“After division matches, competitors may be invited to compete at Marine Corps Matches, placing Marines on the Marine Corps Shooting Team,” said Whiteker. “This event benefits a Marine by adhering to our ethos of ‘every Marine a rifleman’ and makes better shots out of the competitors who in turn train their Marines to be better shots.”

Out of 70 competitors, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron won the team matches with MWSS-171 coming in at a close second.

Although taking home the trophy is the goal of each team, Marines acquired new skills and knowledge that carry them through their Marine Corps career. Gionna Yuhas, a supply administration operations clerk with Combat Logistics Company 36, said even though she has never shot an M9 pistol, she grabbed at the opportunity.

“I have learned so much about life through practicing and competing with the pistol,” said Yuhas. “I was given a piece of advice that really stuck with me. ‘Never look back on your last shot, always concentrate on the next one.’ Focusing on a bad shot will psych you out and carry into the next round.”

Four units from MCAS Iwakuni will be participating in the Far East Division Matches held Dec. 7–18 at Camp Hansen, Okinawa.
