NORFOLK, Va. (Nov. 16, 2015) — A Sailor deployed aboard guided-missile destroyer USS Bulkeley (DDG 84) pulled a man from a truck involved in a high-speed car crash, Nov. 15.

Fire Controlman 3rd Class Tyler Swain and his family were driving away from a Wells Fargo bank in Norfolk when they heard police sirens.

The family watched as two police cruisers chased a car moving at approximately 100 mph when the vehicle collided with a truck. The truck flipped into the air and landed on a nearby SUV.

“As soon as I saw it happen, I just got out of my truck, it was instinct,” said Swain.

Swain’s family pulled over and he and his mother, Frances Swain, ran to the flipped truck. They looked in a window to check the condition of the driver.

Frances opened the door, which was facing up, as Tyler climbed on top of the vehicle, pulled the man out from the truck, and assisted the man to safety.

“The Navy has always taught us to help others. It doesn’t matter if it’s Navy or a civilian, the military teaches you to help people in need,” said Tyler.

After the man was settled on the side of the road waiting for police assistance, he thanked the Swains.

“He came over and shook my hand, thanked me, asked me my name and wanted to tell me he appreciated everything I did,” said Tyler.

The rescue took place the day before Tyler began a 7-month deployment to the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility as part of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group.

“I thought it was pretty cool,” said Fire Controlman 2nd Class Matthew McMeans. “He told me the story, and I thought ‘Heck of a last day in port’.”

McMeans works on Bulkeley’s aft Close-In Weapons System (CIWS) with Swain. He said Swain’s story is getting around the ship pretty quickly, but Swain is humble about the experience – a normal guy placed in an extraordinary situation.

Bulkeley is currently deployed with the Harry S. Truman Strike Group (HSTSG) in support of maritime security operations and theater security operation cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th and 6th fleet areas of responsibility. HSTSG consists of Bulkeley, the staff of Carrier Strike Group 8, USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 28, and her ships guided-missile destroyers USS Gravely (DDG 107), USS Gonzalez (DDG 68) and guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio (CG 68).
