NORMAN, Okla. -- Soldiers and family members gathered to honor the loss of Sgt. Devin Fuller, of Oklahoma City, Sunday at the Norman Armed Forces Reserve Center.

The service was held to give fellow service members and Sgt. Fuller’s family and friends a chance to say goodbye to their late comrade, son, brother and father.

Fuller was shot and killed late Saturday night while picking up a friend in Northwest Oklahoma City.

“I’m always upset any time we lose a Soldier,” said Capt. Joshua Bird, brigade chaplain. “That leaves a void in our ranks.”

Fuller, a water treatment specialist with Headquarters Company, 700th Brigade Support Battalion, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Oklahoma Army National Guard, served nine months in Afghanistan in 2011 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

“He was always the kid that was right in there getting it done every day - supporting his team and supporting his section,” said Capt. James Hight, brigade logistics officer. “You could always rely on him. He left his mark here.”

Soldiers walked up one by one to pay their respects and salute the memorial of Fuller, a rifle adorned with his boots, patrol cap and dog tags.

“He was a blessing to have as a Soldier and a blessing to have as a leader,” said Maj. Darrin Fox, Fuller’s former commander in Afghanistan. “He’s going to be truly missed.”
