BELLE CHASSE, La. – Lt. Col. Daniel W. Harlow assumes command of the 159th Maintenance Group after relinquishing command of the 159th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron to Lt. Col. Jonathan D. Mumme. The formal ceremonies were held at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans Oct. 18.

Harlow has been at the 159th Fighter Wing since 2003 and has been the AMXS commander for five years.
“His leadership has propelled the 159th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron to historic mission capable rates as well as sortie execution,” said Maj. Gen. Glenn H. Curtis, the adjutant general of the Louisiana Air National Guard.

The mission capable rate has been at an average of 80 percent for the past two years. While the standard is 65 percent, the group is well above that, said Harlow. This is the most flying hours the group has had in 10 years and the sorties hit records this year.
He credits the accomplishments to the Airmen and hopes to be able to recognize them more in his new role as group commander.

“It’s about the Airmen,” Harlow said. “Me getting command is a by-product of how they perform. This is what the group did, not just what I did. It’s because of them that I am in the position that I am.”
Harlow sees it as an honor to be able to stay in maintenance at such a high level of leadership. One of his goals is to give Airmen the recognition they deserved for all their hard work.

“If you have my back, I’ll have yours,” Harlow said. “They’ve proven that they got my back so it’s time to return the favor and watch theirs.”

Harlow recognizes Col. Roy V. Qualls and Chief Master Sgt. Gerald Raynald as people who have advised and molded him to be the commander he is today.
As Harlow leaves the 159th AMXS, he presented Mumme with the information he needed to succeed as the squadron commander.

Mumme served on active duty for 10 years prior to coming to the 159th Fighter Wing in 2010. The squadron’s accomplishments and hard work motivated Mumme to volunteer for the position. His experience in leadership has prepared him to become the maintenance squadron commander. He looks forward to more interaction with members of the unit.

“One of the things that motivated me to volunteer for the position was the last TDY to Red Flag,” said Mumme. “We were the only unit that didn’t have any chargeable ground aborts and we flew more sorties there than we contracted.”

As the former director of operations, he is bringing a new set of eyes and a fresh perspective to make sure everything is the best it can be.

Mumme hopes to learn from everyone and be there to provide support from the command level when it is needed and using the right resources to take care of our people.
