SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii - Two members of the 130th Engineer Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, among others stationed on Schofield Barracks, were recognized for their volunteer service by the 25th Infantry Division commanding general, Maj. Gen. Charles A. Flynn, and senior enlisted adviser, Command Sgt. Maj. Scott A. Brzak, during Na Koa Volunteer Recognition ceremony at the Nehelani Conference and Banquet Center here, Oct. 28.

The ceremony takes place quarterly to recognize individuals in the community who meet the criteria for outstanding volunteer service. The name Na Koa, which means the warriors, is significant to the installation’s Hawaiian heritage.

Sgt. 1st Class Donaval Avila-Martinez, of Headquarters and Headquarters Command, 130th Engineer Brigade, received the Na Koa Volunteer Award for contributing more than 500 hours of community service as a youth sports coach for the Child Youth Services sports league.

Avila began coaching in 2006, while stationed at his previous duty assignments, and for the past two years, while stationed here, he has coached children from the ages of nine to 15 in basketball, baseball, track and soccer.

In addition to coaching the youth, he currently coaches both his brigade and company football teams and will soon take on the position as head coach for one of the competitive youth volleyball teams.

“Sports are a great opportunity for youth to learn discipline and establish an early interest in activities that will keep them out of trouble and increase their self-esteem,” said Avila. “My driving force and love of coaching comes from these athletes’ eagerness to learn.”

Another volunteer recognized during the ceremony was Haley Harper, daughter of Maj. Brian Harper, the 130th Engineer Brigade logistics officer.

She was presented a Certificate of Achievement to the Youth for her community involvement with bringing awareness to youth-related issues and working to improve the overall wellness and resiliency of the youth.

During her volunteer efforts, Harper teamed up with three other classmates to create a first-place winning poster addressing “hot-button” issues in support of the Youth “Take a Stand!” awareness and education campaign.
