VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - While the annual Army versus Navy football game is right around the corner, there are many examples of how these two services are working together off of the football field to discuss seabasing future naval capabilities and integration, Oct. 30.

A quarterly meeting of the “Joint Seabasing Working Group” was hosted by the Navy Expeditionary Warfare Development Command (NEXWDC), headquartered at Joint Expeditionary Little Creek-Fort Story in Virginia Beach, and was held to discuss seabasing capabilities and identify gaps that may require a technical solution.

Working with the Army and the Navy, the Marine Corps Combat Development Command served as the lead organization for the symposium bringing together multiple players to discuss how best to exploit the naval maneuver space in the littorals and beyond from at sea platforms.

“The symposium was held to further promote the operational capabilities and future doctrinal inclusion of Navy Expeditionary Combat Command forces as they integrate with joint, coalition, and inter-agency partners to fully exploit the littorals and beyond,” said Cmdr. John Lucas, assigned to NEXWDC.

Lucas added that as the services look toward the future the need to examine emerging concepts from the Navy and the Marine Corps ultimately led to the natural progression of understanding where the Army is heading with regard to their operations from the sea.

“Our focus is still primarily looking to the future of emerging concepts, capabilities, technologies, and opportunities to expand the seabasing portfolio,” said Lucas.

The symposium group members will continue to meet on a quarterly basis.

“We use the Seabasing officer action group, which is supported by the seabasing community of interest as a means to exchange and update information and identify events and exercises from which we can promote interoperability,” said Lucas.

NEXWDC, which prepares NECC forces for deployment while refining expeditionary capability employment, officially stood up as a command on June 30, 2015. NEXWDC assists with manning and training of NECC’s construction, coastal riverine and explosive ordnance forces.
