ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. - As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Family Advocacy program hosted a Purple Ribbon Luncheon to raise awareness Oct. 27.

The luncheon was held to encourage victims of domestic violence and sexual assault to reach out for help, inform attendees of available resources and honor Working Against Violence, Inc. in Rapid City.

Approximately 150 people attended, to include Airmen, civilian employees, community leaders and the Rapid City and Box Elder Police Departments.

“Awareness is huge,” said Pam Roes, luncheon attendee. “You need awareness to know what to look out for. If you see something, you should speak up.”

Mary Corbine, WAVI executive director and luncheon keynote speaker, stressed the importance of awareness and the services the group provides victims, including treatment support, legal assistance and shelter in a secured facility.

Founded in 1978, WAVI assists people in the Black Hills region, areas of North Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa and Wyoming.

WAVI works to foster a community free of domestic violence and sexual assault through advocacy, education and support services.

WAVI is the largest shelter in the Black Hills region, and provided more than 30,000 services in 2014.

Corbine emphasized the shelter doors are always open to victims seeking assistance.
