CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines, sailors, families and their friends gathered for an evening of Halloween fun during two II Marine Expeditionary Force Trunk or Treat events at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Oct. 29, 2015.
Trunk or Treat is held throughout the Marine Corps to allow service members and their families to participate in Halloween-themed events. This year, Marine Headquarters Group, II MEF, and 2nd Maintenance Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 25, held activities for children and adults.
“The events are important because they give the families opportunities to enjoy and express themselves,” said Michael Cline, the family readiness officer of Marine Headquarters Group. Volunteers at two locations, one for MHG and one for 2nd Maint. Bn., parked their vehicles and opened their trunks to invite trick-or-treaters to collect candy and explore haunted houses set up by the various units.
At the 2nd Maint. Bn. lot, service members and their families carved pumpkins and even represented survival of humanity in a five-kilometer zombie run. While at the MHG lot, children, adults and units competed for the best costumes and decorations, and defended themselves against a zombie attack.
“If there’s ever an opportunity for the service members to enjoy themselves, it’s one of these family-readiness events,” said Cline. “This became an awesome event, and everyone enjoyed themselves with great representation from all the units involved.”
Participation in 2nd Maint. Bn. events earned attendees raffle tickets to be used for a chance at winning several prizes including a battalion shirt, battalion coin or an extended weekend liberty period, personally awarded by Lt. Col. Edwin Norris, the battalion’s commanding officer, and Sgt. Maj. Ronnie Ellis, the battalion sergeant major.
Edwin, dressed as the Big Bad Wolf made famous by the story of Little Red Riding Hood, expressed his gratitude for the hard work of the volunteers who made the event possible.
“This was all put together by our non-commissioned officers,” Norris said “It is nice to come out and enjoy a little bit of camaraderie. A job well done to all.”
