DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. – Two teams at the top of the standings faced off in intramural football Oct. 26, 2015, at the base football fields. The 436th Security Forces Squadron and 436th Logistics Readiness Squadron split their previous two clashes of the season.

In the first meeting, it was the Defenders of the 436th SFS that handed LRS their second loss of the season, 30-13 on Sept. 21, 2015.

“We had a lot of turnovers in the first half. It was something we couldn’t overcome offensively; we couldn’t score enough touchdowns,” said Deok Kim, 436th LRS coach, referring to the first game.

The 436th LRS came into Monday night’s game 8-2, riding on a 7-game winning streak that included a win over the 436th SFS in their second match, Oct. 7, 13-7 by scoring on the last play of the game and handing the Defenders the first loss of their season.

“They [LRS] knew our game plan, our plays, they knew exactly where to be and sat in their zones,” said John Broughal, 436th SFS coach. “They converted on a fourth down and goal from the 20 yard line and they scored a touchdown for the win.”

Both teams had health and personnel issues, SFS having the most serious with having only seven players and forcing each of them to play both offense and defense. LRS had four key players out due to injuries but had a deep bench to fill in for the injured.

Scoring on most of their possessions, LRS rolled to a comfortable 28-7 lead at the end of the first half against what appeared to be a physically worn-down SFS team at the mercy of LRS’s quarterback Joshua Orick and running back Travis Cabb.

“We definitely got tired and definitely underestimated LRS. They came out hot,” said Broughal. “They [LRS] had two consecutive scoring drives and two interceptions right off the bat.”

In the beginning of the second half, SFS came out rejuvenated but soon ran out of steam against LRS who consistently sent in fresh players and kept up a strong defense against the Defender’s running and passing game.

Having that deep bench of talent and fresh players, LRS held on for a 35-15 victory that improved their record to 9-2 and moved them into second place in the AFC, while SFS dropped to third place with a 7-2-1 record.

“The highlight of the game for me was our rushing game,” said Orick. “Normally flag football is a mobile quarterback type game. We got the rushing game going really well by running to the right or left, it really didn’t matter. We had it clicking.”
