FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- For the second straight year, the U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (Airborne) was recognized as the U.S. Army Reserve Command's Best Antiterrorism Program during a ceremony held Oct. 26 here.
Army Reserve Capt. Mary Nelson, who is from Cleveland, Ohio, accepted the 2014 award on behalf of the command, which recognizes antiterrorism achievements that result in significantly higher levels of protection for Army Reserve personnel and resources.
"I applaud the enthusiasm and diligence that the entire command antiterrorism team has invested in making this the best antiterrorism program within the Army Reserve," Maj. Gen. David Conboy, USARC's Deputy Commanding General (Operations) wrote in a congratulatory letter.
Conboy said the team's tireless efforts was directly responsible for the recognition of the award.
"The implementation of this program is a recipe for success," he said. "The integration of PAO to deliver antiterrorism information within the command demonstrated an innovative process."
Command Sgt. Maj. Peter Running, USACAPOC(A)'s senior enlisted Soldier, said receiving the award validates the professionalism and dedication of the command staff and leadership support and focus.
"From a security standpoint, this program is making sure our Soldiers can keep track of what we are doing internally to keep ourselves safe, keep track of what's going around the area so that when our folks are out conducting missions, they are prepared to and ready for the unknown," he said.
Running said taking top honors two years in a row is a monumental feat.
"I can't say enough about the tenacity of the staff which we have here in the command," he said. "They can focus diligently to not only get recognized once but twice and back-to-back," he said.
Mark Brooks, USARC's Chief, Antiterrorism Branch, said Nelson and her team is doing it right.
"We can always look toward USACAPOC as the model to the Army on best business practices," he said. "They worked hard to define a program others can look toward as a model of success. "It's evident by winning this award for the second year in a row. We look forward to 2015 and possible a third award."
Col. Douglas Smith, the U.S. Army Reserve Command's G/34, said it's always a good day to recognize Army Reserve Soldiers going great things in the field.
"This command has an outstanding young officer leading a program that is not easy to manage," Smith said. "She's works hard, and it definitely paid off for her and the command."
With more than 13,000 Soldiers in 31 states, USACAPOC(A) supports the Army and joint forces with strategic, operational and tactical Civil Affairs, Psychological Operations and most recently Information Operations capabilities across the range of military operations.
USACAPOC(A) has 94 percent of the Army's General Purpose Forces' CA Capability, 100 percent of the Army's General Purpose Forces' PSYOP Capability and 42 percent of the Army's General Purpose Forces' I/O Capability. The command also has oversight of all Army Reserve airborne operations.
