KABUL —During an inaugural environmental workshop, more than 100 Afghan leaders joined Resolute Support personnel and international partners in developing a strengthened environmental security policy in Afghanistan.
The Ministry of Defense hosted the three-day event which included participants from event sponsor U.S. Central Command, the National Environmental Protection Agency of Afghanistan, NATO, United Nations, Kabul University, U.S. Forces-Afghanistan and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan coordinated the workshop to serve as a platform to engage Afghan National Defense and Security Forces, coalition and international environmental leaders.
“Smart, sustainable environmental solutions mean strengthened economic security—a pillar of President Ghani’s National Security Policy. Economic security in turn leads to increased national and regional security," said CSTC-A commander, U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Gordon “Skip” Davis Jr. “As we share, engage and discuss Afghan environmental procedures and coalition best practices, we are making Afghanistan—and the world—stronger, safer—and sustainable.”
Event participants worked together to increase environmental management and operational practices, build workable environmental policies for the Ministries of Defense and Interior and foster a productive communication and training partnership.
Hazardous waste and material management, air quality fundamentals, wastewater management, spill response, recycling and solid and medical waste handling were among the issues tackled.
“CSTC-A, Resolute Support and our coalition partners are working shoulder to shoulder with our Afghan partners to develop systems and processes that are tailored to strengthen the environmental policy here in Afghanistan,” said Davis. “We are united to develop Afghan-owned, Afghan-led solutions.”
The international, multi-organizational partners joined forces with the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces leadership to develop solutions for environmental sustainment in Kabul and throughout the nation.
“As professionals, soldiers, citizens and children of the land it is our obligation to protect Afghanistan,” said Acting Minister of Defense Mohammed Masoom Stanekzai. “The environment is an inheritance from our ancestors and we must make it better for future generations.”
