NAVAL WEAPONS STATION YORKTOWN, Va. (October 23, 2015) – Bravo Five, Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team (Fast) Company conducted Operational Readiness Exercise Oct. 18-22 at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown.

The ORE is a company led exercise that evaluates a platoon’s ability in fixed site security and other fleet antiterrorism security tasks before a regimental evaluation.

“The goal for the ORE is recapturing an embassy, establishing the main site, and being able to support the ambassador and anything he needs from us,” said Staff Sgt. Austin Rice, platoon sergeant of fifth platoon.
The ORE consisted of different tasks the platoon was being evaluated on including recapturing an embassy, fast-roping out of MH-60S Seahawk helicopters, providing humanitarian aid, riot control, clearing buildings, and sending out elements to conduct split site operations.

“This is my first platoon with Fast and my first ORE,” said Capt. Shane Halpern, platoon commander of fifth platoon. “I think overall we’re doing well, but there are things we need to work towards before the regiment evaluation.”

For many of the Marines this was their first ORE. They had to complete tasks while dealing with little sleep and high stressful situations.

Halpern a Memphis, Tenn., native, said, “All our training events and exercises have been built in preparation for this week and a couple weeks from now at the regimental evaluation.”

The platoon formed in January, spent three and a half months in Cuba where they trained, and will be deploying to the Pacific once training is complete.

“I think the platoon has done pretty well. My only disappointments are with little things that won’t be hard to fix,” said Rice. “I’ve been pretty excited to come out here and see what the platoon is made of.”

As the platoon sergeant, Rice is responsible for the logistics and takes care of the enlisted Marines. He has been with Bravo Five for about a year and a half but was in the same platoon eight years ago as a lance corporal.

“Most of our guys are in good spirits. We have done well with the sleep cycle and making sure the guys are well fed,” said Rice, a Mansfield, Texas, native. “Everything we did this week prepares us for the [Mission Rehearsal Exercise].”
