MARINE AIR GROUND COMBAT CENTER TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. – Corpsmen from 2nd Dental Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, provide dental support to the 8th Marine Regiment in preparation for their upcoming deployment during Integrated Training Exercise 1-16 aboard Marine Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif., Oct. 24, 2015.

This dental team is not just here to train in the sand. They have a much larger mission to accomplish during the next couple weeks.

“We’re trying to get people ready for the upcoming deployment so we’re seeing almost every single Marine,” said Lieutenant Richard Bartol, officer in charge of the dental team. “We’ve got an astronomical amount of people to see out here. More than we’ll probably be able to see but we’re trying to get as much done as we can so that when they go back to Camp Lejeune we’ve got the numbers low enough so they can take care of the rest at the base clinics.”

The team has been treating more than twenty-five Marines each day to accomplish this mission. Though they are operating in a field environment out here, Bartol says they have all the equipment they would need to take care of any dental problems.

“We have every capability that we have back home,” said Bartol. “We have capabilities for surgery. We have capabilities for fillings and exams. The drawback is not what we could do but what should we do. Because our mission out here is mission readiness and that’s why we’re here, we’re focusing mostly on exams and bigger fillings.”

The dental team’s superior equipment has actually turned into an asset for the medical team. They are able to sterilize instruments for the field corpsman and provide onsite x-rays for small injuries. They are also planning to team up with medical later on during ITX to conduct a training class on local anesthetics for the independent duty corpsmen.
