Camp Zama Girl Scouts give back, foster cross-cultural relationships

CAMP ZAMA, Japan — As one of the many volunteer projects that the Camp Zama Girl Scouts take on over the course of a year, the Furusato Festival, which was held Oct. 18 this year, is one of the most memorable, said Melanie Kincaid, Camp Zama Girl Scout Overseas Committee Chair administrator.

Over 45 Camp Zama Girl Scouts provided free Halloween themed stickers and applied removable tattoos to festival participants.

“Not only does this event give the girls a chance to interact with their Japanese neighbors beyond the gate, but they can also join them in enjoying music, dance, festival food, and the many children activities held throughout the grounds,” said Kincaid.

The Camp Zama Girl Scouts is a program that supports Girl Scouts of all ages living in and around Camp Zama, Japan, said Kincaid.

In addition to offering opportunities for adventure, fun, and leadership that is available to our stateside Girl Scout sisters, Kincaid continued, we have a vibrant host nation program which provides our girls with wonderful opportunities to make new friends, explore Japan, and foster cross-cultural understanding.

Participating in activities such as the Furusato Festival, is one small way of giving back to our surrounding community and also connecting to the wonderful people that live outside of the gates of Camp Zama, Kincaid concluded.
