SAN DIEGO - One of the first things people tend to notice about a Marine is the uniform. Whether it is because of the form, fit or colors, Marines’ style is easy to distinguish.

Recruits of Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, got their first chance to try on their uniforms and attended their first uniform fitting at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Oct. 14. The session lasted all day for the recruits and gave them a chance to get a taste of what wearing such a uniform is all about.

“It’s all kind of new to me personally,” said Recruit Joshua G. Williams, Delta Company. “I don’t think any of us want to look like garbage when we’re wearing these uniforms, and we want to be able to look good. We don’t want to disappoint any of our drill instructors, we want to impress them.”

Recruits start by getting measured and trying on certain articles of clothing, and their measurements and sizes are recorded on a slip of paper. They carried the paper with them to make it easier to receive their uniform pieces.

“It infects their sense of reality because they finally get to try on this uniform that they’ve been seeing [their drill instructors] wear,” said Staff Sgt. Dale G. Greig, drill instructor. “It’s like taking one more step into a new reality and raising that level of motivation for them just a little bit.”

After filling out their slips of paper, the recruits lined up to receive the uniform pieces based on their size. When they had all of their uniform pieces, the recruits returned to the designated area for changing, fitting and tailoring.

“At first, we weren’t really focused on looking nice, but that kind of changes for some reason when we get here,” said 18-year-old Williams. “All of a sudden we’re trying to look our best, and we’re helping each other out, making sure there aren’t any wrinkles anywhere.”

“The civilians who work here know what they’re doing,” said Greig, originally from Port Elizabeth, South Africa. “They answer any questions the recruits may have about their uniforms. They want to make sure they have the proper fit, especially for future inspections. It’s their job to tune it and tighten it up for the recruits.”

This was the initial fitting for Delta Company recruits and they will return for a second time a couple of weeks before graduation for their final fitting.

“That’s what I’m most excited about, getting to wear them for graduation,” said Williams, a native of Bandera, Texas. “It’s like, you put them on and you’re almost immediately proud to be who you are when wearing them.”

The recruits will soon come to learn that their uniforms will become a big part of their Marine Corps careers and who they will be as Marines.
