MISAWA, Japan - Sailors forward deployed to Misawa Air Base, Japan, celebrated the U.S. Navy's 240th birthday at the Tohoku Enlisted Club Oct. 16, 2015.
Rear Adm. Tomohiko Madono of Commander 2nd Fleet Air Wing, Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force was the guest speaker this year.
“It is a great honor and privilege to be able to celebrate the U.S. Navy’s birthday alongside our allies and friends,” said Madono. “Ever since I was commissioned 26 years ago, the United States Navy has been my friend and comrade.”
Madono highlighted the positive effect that the U.S. Navy has had in Misawa and how he hopes to maintain our great relationship for many years to come.
After Rear Adm. Madono’s speech Naval Air Facility Misawa’s Navy Ball Committee presented him with a friendship plaque.
To close the ceremony the oldest and youngest Sailors in attendance came forward to cut the Navy birthday cake, as is tradition.
“This is a day to be proud,” said Capt. Keith Henry, the commanding officer of Naval Air Facility Misawa. “Be proud of your naval history, be proud of what you’re a part of, this day is for you so let’s celebrate it.”
