CAMP PENDLETON, Calif.– The U.S. Navy’s premier training facility for expeditionary medicine welcomed more than 200 medical professionals from the United Kingdom’s Second Medical Brigade during Operation Integrated Serpent, Oct. 3-16.

Sailors at the Navy Expeditionary Medical Training Institute (NEMTI) hosted the British Army’s 243 (Bristol) and 204 (Belfast) field hospital units during the two-week exercise, designed to promote positive military relations, increase cultural awareness and enhance training and understanding of each other's expeditionary medical capabilities.

“It’s a chance for us to come together with our UK partners, and share what we do with them,” said Capt. Patrick Paul, NEMTI’s Officer-in-Charge. “It helps us build on the relationships that were born out of our shared experiences in the Afghanistan conflict, where we learned to rely on one another in order to succeed in very difficult circumstances.”

The United Kingdom service members, many of which have never been to the United States, took part in multiple training evolutions in expeditionary medicine, including simulated field exercises and medical evacuations.
“This is an incredible opportunity for us,” said Lt. Col. Mark Sheridan, Commanding Officer of the 204 (Belfast) field hospital unit. “We are excited to learn from and train with our American counterparts; to sharpen one another as we work to refine our skills.”

Lt. Col. Sheridan also discussed how valuable the training at NEMTI has been to his unit.

“The facilities are just incredible,” he said. "We are very fortunate to be able to train at such a facility as NEMTI. The staff have been incredible, and our unit will come away with some much-needed experience as a result of this exercise."

The Naval Expeditionary Medical Training Institute, a detachment of the Navy Medicine Operational Training Center (NMOTC), is the leader in expeditionary medical training in the U.S. Navy, and provides critical pre-deployment training to personnel deploying to contingency operations in areas throughout the world. Its facilities, located in the mountainous desert environment of Camp Pendleton, Calif., are designed to mimic field conditions of areas in the Niddle East, such as Afghanistan.

NEMTI and NMOTC are part of the Navy Medicine team, a global health care network of Navy medical professionals around the world who provide high-quality health care to eligible beneficiaries. Navy Medicine personnel deploy with Sailors and Marines worldwide, providing critical mission support aboard ships, in the air, under the sea and on the battlefield.
