WILMINGTON, N.C. - Three combat deployments prepared Stan Roberts to face fear but after his medical retirement from the Marine Corps due to wartime injuries, he faced the greatest fear of his life.

“Looking for a civilian job was terrifying, asking an employer 'can you help me provide for my family?'” said Roberts, now an engineer with Cisco Systems.

Leaders from across North Carolina in business, education, local, state and federal government pledged their organizations would do just that for veterans at the NC4ME Military Employment Summit hosted at Cape Fear Community College, Sept. 29, 2015.

“We can only go forward with our employers,” said North Carolina National Guard commander, Army Maj. Gen. Greg Lusk, the adjutant general of North Carolina.

Lusk joined fellow experts in leadership, recruitment, training and human resources to turn veteran skills into the economic advantages North Carolina businesses need in an ever more competitive marketplace.

“Talent is the number one economic driver and we got it,” said Kimberly Lindsay, executive director of NC4ME.

Lusk and other speakers shared the lessons of 14 years of employing war veterans, active, reserve and National Guard, with the crowd of managers and cooperate executives.

“Veterans are good for business,” said Ilario Pantano, director of North Carolina Division of Veteran Affairs.

These lessons not only benefit the employer and economy but prepares the country for future conflicts.

“We have done tremendous things and we see in the headlines the challenges ahead are numerous,” said Lusk.

After the speakers finished perhaps, the most important part of the summit begins, the networking. There is a constant murmur of veterans, their advocates with executives from Fortune 500 members to small neighborhood shops. “I have someone who can do that ... let me introduce ... he can start tomorrow ... wow.”

NC4ME (N.C. for Military Employment), is a privately funded initiative of the North Carolina Veterans Foundation. It is a comprehensive military employment solution educating commercial leaders and hiring managers to match military talent with business needs.
