JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska - Airmen with the Alaska Air National Guard’s 210th and 212th Rescue Squadrons rescued two individuals near the Knik Glacier, last night.
According to the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center, the two individuals lost their all-terrain vehicle near the glacier when it sank into the Knik River.
“Initially, the two contacted a friend using a cellphone, who then contacted the Alaska State Troopers to request help,” said Lt. Col. Scot Milani, director of the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center.
Because of trail conditions and darkness, the AST requested support from the Alaska Air National Guard’s 176th Wing.
After the 176th Wing accepted the mission, they launched an HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter from the 210th Rescue Squadron with a team of two pararescuemen from the 212th Rescue Squadron on board, out of JBER.
The rescue crew used night-vision devices to navigate to the area and soon located the distressed individuals near Friday Creek.
“They were turning their cellphone on and off to conserve battery power and also built a fire,” Milani said.
The rescue crew loaded the two individuals onto the helicopter and transported them to the Palmer airport, where they were released to the AST.
For this mission, the 210th and 212th Rescue Squadrons were awarded with two saves.
