GRAFENWOEHR, Germany – After winning the divisional level competition, the 23rd Ordnance Company’s 'Deathdealer' culinary team prepared to compete at U.S. Army Europe level. Like, the first level of the competition, the full set up of the field site took the team approximately 30 days. The competition presented an opportunity to develop Soldiers professionally, honing their culinary skills by cooking twice a day up until evaluation day.

Throughout the month, Soldiers received consistent mentorship from team leaders. Sgt. 1st Class Michael Perkins, Staff Sgt. Sean Kim, Sgt. Raul Pacheco and Sgt. Dan Hernandez provided guidance to all Soldiers participating on this competition, sharing knowledge they gained as culinary specialists and non-commissioned officers.

“The biggest thing I want you to take out of this experience is the training. We do not get this opportunity often, rolling out and executing our training in a field environment. It is essential to pay close attention to the guidance we are providing and execute it as well,” Perkins said to his team.

On evaluation day, representatives from 21st Theater Sustainment Command and U.S.Army Europe arrived at the field site to inspect the facilities as well as the prepared food. The 'Deathdealer' culinary team prepared a special treat for the evaluators. Tacos, including hand rolled enchiladas, mango pico, and cheesecake bites were served to the inspectors at the field site.

“The importance of this program is to recognize the Soldiers for their hard work through media exposure, awards and the program itself. Not only does it provide the Soldiers motivation but it also gives them the confidence to execute their duties,” said Chief Warrant Officer 4 Jeffrey Manninen, the representative for the 21st Theater Sustainment Command.

After two weeks, the evaluators processed the results of all the competitors and announced the 'Deathdealer' culinary team from 23rd Ordnance Company won the U.S. Army Europe competition. Next year, the team will go on to compete at the Department of the Army level.
