BAUMHOLDER, Germany - Soldiers from 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion’s 240th Quartermaster Support Company established a large-scale fuel point and water purification site Sept. 22 and 23, during “Liquid Logistics Shock,” demonstrating the ability to respond quickly to fuel and water requirements.

The “Liquid Logistics Shock” is part of a series of company-level readiness exercises, empowering junior leaders to demonstrate sustainment capabilities provided by the 16th Sustainment Brigade.

Of the active duty units stationed in Europe, only 240th QMSC has equipment to facilitate bulk fuel storage and distribution. The Fuel System Supply Point, set up for the “shock” exercise has a capacity to hold 120,000 gal of fuel, supporting eight distribution points for tankers to draw the fuel.

Sgt. Andrew Waddington, 240th QMSC’s senior petroleum supply NCO during the “shock”, said, “As the only active duty company in Europe with this system, it is important to practice and become proficient at deploying and operating on a short timeline.”

Once fully set up, the FSSP spanned half the Baumholder Army Airfield. More than 20 Soldiers worked over two days to set up the system. 317th Support Maintenance Company also provided support.

“It’s good to be able to work outside of your career field and learn new things. All the Soldiers here learned how to set up a fuel point and it prepares us to assist our sister companies and understand their missions and roles,” said 1st Lt. Kathleen McDougall, a platoon leader with the 317th SMC.

Overall, the exercise tested the company’s ability to react quickly and anticipate the challenges associated with setting up a complex system with limited resources.

Spc. Anton Johnson, a petroleum supply specialist with 240th, said, “After this, I feel confident in my peers and supervisors, because we were able to pull together with what we had, and made the mission happen.”
