PACIFIC OCEAN - The U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps traces its history back to the beginnings of the Navy in 1775. In times of war and peace, the Chaplain Corps has provided aid and comfort for Sailors from the deserts of the Middle East to the middle of the ocean.
Aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) the Chaplain Corps continues to help Sailors in many different ways.
“To inspire hope and strengthen well-being through the deliverance and coordination of effective ministry at sea and shore, that is our mission,” said Lt. Cmdr. Michael Tagaloa, a chaplain aboard Ronald Reagan. “The chaplains, religious programs specialists and Command Religious Ministries Department (CRMD) staff are here to serve you. If you have any questions, comments or concerns please don’t hesitate to get in contact with us.”
The chapel offers services such as Roman Catholic mass, Buddhist Meditation, Jewish Shabbat and more.
Although the main mission of the Chapel is to provide religious accommodations for all Sailors, these are not the only services that they offer. The chapel also provides its spaces as a place for Sailors to come and relax during their free time.
“CRMD is all about good customer service,” said Tagaloa. “Our spaces are open day and night for Sailors of all ranks to come and rest your mind in prayer, meditation or just peaceful silence.”
Aside from a quiet area to rest, the chapel also offers Sailors other ways to de-stress.
“We provide Sailors the opportunity to contact their families and surf the web in our internet café,” said Religious Programs Specialist 3rd Class Kassandra Castaneda, from San Antonio. “We also have the library where you can check out a book for up to thirty days and movies and television shows for 48 hours. We even have a theater where Sailors can choose to watch a movie and relax in front of a big screen TV.”
Ronald Reagan and its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, provide a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interests of the U.S. and its allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
