JACKSON, Miss.- Nearly 200 Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 204th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, Mississippi Army National Guard, headquartered in Newton, departed from Jackson - Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport en route to Fort Bliss, Texas, for post-mobilization Sept. 19, 2015.

The unit is traveling to Ft. Bliss to complete its post-mobilization training required for deployment. While in the national capital region (NCR), the 1-204th ADA will be responsible for conducting integrated air defense systems missions in their assigned areas.

“We are getting evaluated and certified for the NCR mission. We have different crew drills to certify for and we have to be able to recognize different aircraft within five seconds of looking at them,” said Sgt. 1st Class Jerry H. Steele, platoon sergeant.

A lot of Soldiers don’t get to experience deployment in their military career. This is the unit’s third mobilization.

“This is my first deployment,” said Sgt. Timika Morris. “It really hasn’t hit me yet that I’m being deployed. It may hit me in about three weeks.”

Steele and Morris give great credit to their unit for being such a cohesive family. They treat each other like family, which makes the deployment much easier to transition into.

“We as a unit are very cohesive and we all get along together. We function as a team very smoothly, we take orders, we get there, and we get the job done,” said Morris.

Steele has deployed on each of the unit’s NCR missions, including in 2003 when the 1-204th was the first National Guard ADA battalion to execute NCR operations.

“Since our first deployment on the NCR mission, we have set standards that are now being followed by units for this same mission. The union that we have as a unit is like family. We know each other and don’t mind working together,” said Steele.
