POSTOJNA, Slovenia – Slovenia hosted Albanian and U.K. Soldiers for Situational Training Exercises (STX) as part of the multinational exercise Immediate Response 2015 near Postnojna, Slovenia, Sept. 13, 2015.

Immediate Response 15 is being conducted from Sept. 9-22, 2015, is a multinational combined and joint exercise conducted in Slovenia and Croatia. The overarching exercise concept supports NATO and coalition interoperability. This is the fifth annual Immediate Response exercise.

The Soldiers are training under a multinational structure, consisting of two command elements, a U.K. lead company and a Slovenian company. The U.K. element is made up of a Slovenian and British platoon and the Slovenian lead element has an Albanian and Slovenian platoon in it.

The STX training is conducted to prepare the Soldiers to play opposition forces during the four-day field training exercise that is the culminating event for IR15.

“For me personally it is a great experience because my platoon is attached to a British company so I get to experience their view of tactics, their terminology, how they analyze the enemy and how they fight. In many aspects they work completely differently then we do. So it’s a good leaning experience for us to broaden our horizons. But on a personal level it’s a great experience because we get to know some excellent people from Great Britain,” said Slovenian 2nd Lt. Gregor Lisjak, platoon leader, 10th Infantry Regiment.

As opposition forces in the FTX the two companies will challenge other IR15 multinational by constantly attacking their defensive posture. To be successful in their mission, they will need to bring the tactics and techniques of the different nations together to fight as one cohesive unit.

“It’s interesting to work with other nations because they all have different tactics. Like from the British we have already learned some new things that I think we’re going to use later in army, it’s good to learn thing that can take you to the next training level,” said Slovenian Privet Roc Mandalj, a soldier with the 10th Infantry Regiment.

The growth in communication and competence was not lost on those overseeing the training.

“The [Albanian] platoon commander’s command and control was 99 percent OK. They were always communicating, he was aware of where the platoon was and they did not start their attack without letting the company commander know," said Albanian Capt. Juliaan Mytebri, an observer controller for IR15, who continued. “This was a nice exercise between the Albanians and Slovenians. We have different tactics we use in attack and defense and this was a good opportunity for interoperability between to different countries for the same common objective.”
