FORT BLISS, Texas - The Army opens its gates to distinguished guests and entertainers frequently to showcase the abilities of our military readiness. The city of El Paso is often a gateway for these guests to stop and explore the unique features of the community.

Cedric the Entertainer became one of these guests as he toured the facilities and met with Soldiers on July 24, aboard Fort Bliss, Texas. He spent the day with Soldiers before performing “The Comedy Get Down” show at The University of Texas at El Paso Don Haskins Center that evening.

Cedric and his entourage made their way to 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division after making several stops throughout the post.

Soldiers with 1st Battalion, 35th Armored Regiment, 2/1 ABCT, were tasked with assisting Cedric and his entourage into an Abrams battle tank. The Soldiers showed them how the weaponry works and rode them down the tank trail.

“You see military movies and such, but to be in it and see how these guys have to operate in that confined space, the concentration it takes and everything that’s going on, you respect the skill set,” said Cedric.

The comedian was able to fly and land a Chinook and Apache helicopter simulator prior to exploring the tanks with 2/1.

“I preferred the Chinook because it was a big, smooth, Cadillac kind of ride, that’s me,” said Cedric. “The other one’s a sport ride, like a Porsche. I’m more of a Cadillac-type person.”

They walked us through the simulator and I even landed the safely without killing any small animals, even if they weren’t real, he added jokingly.

Cedric said his first impression was amazement with the size and hospitality of the post.

“It’s not like any idea of a military base you would think,” said Cedric. “I was quite surprised to see just how vast this place is, it’s huge and well put-together with great facilities.”

Cedric made jokes about his camouflage shorts and his ability to blend in with the enlisted Soldiers amid the modest city of Fort Bliss.

“Thanks to everyone here at Fort Bliss,” said Cedric. “I just really enjoyed meeting everybody, seeing the Soldiers and meeting the families. It really is a family environment out here and the work of watching and protecting America is happening on a serious basis right here.”

Cedric went on to perform the show later in the evening with fellow comedians Eddie Griffin, D.L. Hughley, George Lopez and Charlie Murphy.
