WESTERN PACIFIC OCEAN - Shots rang out from seven M16 rifles in honor of the victims of Sept. 11, 2001, during a memorial ceremony aboard the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville (CG 62), Sept. 11.

Chancellorsville Sailors performed a 21-gun salute in honor of those who perished 14 years ago in the simultaneous attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon and for the passengers and crews of the hijacked airliners.

“We stand here in remembrance of that fateful Tuesday morning and are reminded that this is why we are here, why we protect our nation while serving in the world’s finest Navy, where all lives matter,” said Capt. Curt Renshaw, commanding officer of Chancellorsville.

Prior to the gun salute, the national flag was presented as a recording of “Taps” played over speakers.

Four chief selectees were given the honor of presenting the national colors during the memorial ceremony.

“I’ve always attended the ceremonies but as far as me being active and involved in it, this was the first time,” said Chief (select) Operations Specialist Joe Pinon, from Orange County, California. “It reminds me of what I do is for a reason. I joined prior to 9/11 but it reinforces of why I am here and why I do what I do.

Chancellorsville is on patrol in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility in support of security and stability in the Indo-Asia- Pacific region.
