STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. - According to Airman 1st Class Brad Hoffler, a 90th Missile Security Forces Squadron defender, “It’s that rush of being able to fly down a mountain at 30 miles an hour, going over jumps, cutting around turns. Biking is always good therapy. It raises your spirits.”

Airmen seeking opportunities for an outdoor adventure or an adrenaline rush can find it readily available on trips organized by the Outdoor Recreation office here.

Thrill-seeking Airmen like Hoffler jumped at the opportunity when Outdoor Rec. hosted a downhill mountain biking trip to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Aug. 29, 2015. This was the second mountain biking trip this season, after positive feedback was received from a trip earlier in the summer.

“We brought a bunch of Airmen down here that enjoy getting outdoors and enjoy mountain biking,” said Augustus Schliffke, an outdoor adventure programmer with Outdoor Rec. “That’s part of the success – because they’re doing something they enjoy.”

Nineteen adventurers trail-dashed down a bike park engraved on the slopes of Mount Werner, a mountain in Routt National Forest, which features more than 50 miles of downhill and free-ride terrain for all ability levels. After their first run down the mountain, the riders were all pumped with excitement.

“It was a blast,” said Staff Sgt. Dylan Haley, 90th Munitions Squadron. “Everyone seemed to have fun. Steamboat has amazing trails. All in all, it was a great day. The trails are really flowing back and forth; your adrenaline pumps up and down. I recommend anyone to come do this.”

Airman 1st Class Jeffery Johnson, 90th Civil Engineer Squadron, is new to the base and this trip was his first excursion with Outdoor Rec.

“It was a hell of a time going downhill mountain biking and going to the little hot springs after,” said Johnson. “It gives you those thrills you just don’t get every day and it’s something new you can try.”

Johnson knows the value of going on trips like this one and making new social connections.

“(Outdoor Rec.) gives you something to look forward to and plenty of opportunities to invite some of your fellow Airmen,” he said.

The day ended with the participants relaxing at a local hot spring 30 minutes away from the bike park.

“The Outdoor Rec. people did a great job to set us up, get us out there and have a lot of fun,” said Haley. “The springs afterwards were amazing.”
