BISMARCK, N.D. — Members of the North Dakota National Guard’s 81st Civil Support Team (CST) tomorrow will join attendees at the North Dakota Emergency Management Association Conference and provide a demonstration of the unit’s hazardous materials response capabilities at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Bismarck.

The purpose of this advisory is to inform the public that the equipment being used during the demonstration is for training purposes only and not for a real-world event.

On standby around the clock, and capable of responding within 90 minutes, CSTs are highly-specialized units that are trained and equipped to assist civilian first responders when reacting to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive agents. The 81st CST regularly trains with local, state and federal agencies during emergency response training exercises and offered to provide emergency managers at tomorrow’s conference a presentation from one of its hazardous materials, or HAZMAT, entry teams.

The unit uses a broad range of specialized equipment to perform their mission, from a secure communications vehicle to a mobile analytical laboratory system with a full suite of chemical, biological and toxin analysis equipment. During tomorrow’s conference, members of the 81st CST also will set up a display featuring the unit’s trucks and equipment in the Radisson’s south parking lot.

According to its website, the North Dakota Emergency Management Association “is an organization dedicated to the advancement of effective Emergency Management in North Dakota. The association seeks to promote professional growth among its members through information exchange, pertinent programs and classes and direct experience.”

Nationally, there are 57 CSTs — one in each state, U.S. territory and Washington, D.C.; with two each in California, Florida and New York.
