LANSING, Mich. - Camp Grayling hosted the annual Michigan National Guard Memorial and Pass in Review early last Friday morning, Aug. 21, 2015. Representatives from nearly every MING unit stood in formation on Camp Grayling’s parade field for review by Michigan Guard leadership and Michigan Lt. Gov. Brian Calley.
In addition to Friday’s ceremony showcasing Michigan National Guard units in formation, the event honored fallen Soldiers by reading their names in remembrance and gratitude while, the 126th Army Band played a beautiful rendition of Taps. Seven individual Soldiers were awarded unique decorations for outstanding service, dedication and performance.
Those able to attend the ceremony to receive their awards were Capt. Richard Sands, Battery A, 1st Battalion, 119th Field Artillery who was recognized during the ceremony for his selection as the General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award recipient; Sgt. Benjamin Driscoll, Company D, 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry Regiment MIARNG State Noncommissioned Officer of the Year award; Staff Sgt. Matthew Florida, Headquarters, 177th Regiment, Regional Training Institute received the Steward Medal; and Sgt. David Smith, Detachment 1, 1431st Engineer Company was recognized as the MIARNG Honor Guard Member of the Year.
Battery A, 1st Battalion, 119th Field Artillery was also presented the “Founders and Patriots of America” award for excellence of overall performance, outstanding quality of leadership and status of mission readiness.
The Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center is the largest National Guard joint training center in the U.S. covering 147,000 acres spanning three northern Michigan counties. Units who train at CGJMTC come from both the active and reserve components of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard, including service members from Canada, Latvia, the United Kingdom, Hungary and Serbia. More than 100 Michigan law enforcement agencies also train at Camp Grayling.
Camp Grayling was founded in 1913 through a land grant from northern Michigan lumber baron, Rasmus Hanson. Military training at Camp Grayling has prepared America’s military for every major conflict since WWI with each passing year growing in complexity and realism.
