INDONESIA - Four Hawaii Army National Guard Soldiers ventured to Indonesia to conduct their fifth Non-Commissioned Professional Development training program in April.

The Subject Matter Expert Exchange allows Hawaii and Indonesia the opportunity to exchange experiences and military tactics through classroom and hands on instruction. NCOs are broken into four squads, assigned a squad leader and Hawaii instructor throughout the training to guide and mentor each Soldier in a smaller setting.

“Our cultural sensitivity and upbringing here in Hawaii makes the Hawaii Army National Guard a perfect fit for this program. I think we separate ourselves not by choice but by actions and our demeanor,” said Sgt. 1st. Class Christian Staszkow, SMEE Team instructor.

Class instruction covered rank structure, Army leadership/subordinate development, first aid, troop leading procedures, basic land navigation techniques, pre-combat checks and pre-combat inspections along with practical exercises demonstrating risk management procedures, tactical movement and hands-on first aid. Instructors demonstrated various technical procedures in those areas and mentored the class as they performed each lesson.

Each squad had the opportunity to teach their rank structure, promotion system, NCO leadership and values during the program. This encouraged Indonesia and Hawaii Soldiers to share experiences from their diverse backgrounds.

“Continuing this exchange program is critical in keeping the positive relations between Hawaii and Indonesia alive. It builds strong personal and military relationships through instruction and allows us to bring back the spirit of these great NCOs,” said Staszkow.

During the week of instruction, the Indonesian NCOs created a motto they performed daily to keep themselves and the instructors highly motivated.

“It’s amazing, there is improvement for the future so this must continue,” said 1st. Sgt. Rizal Agung Nugraha, Tentara Nasional Indonesia Angkatan Darat (TNI-AD) Indonesian NCO.

The similarities and differences in culture are discovered and long lasting relationships formed through the exchange of military doctrine and personal experiences that will forever be remembered.

“It’s very important that we maintain our relationship with Indonesia through this exchange program,” said Sgt. Maj. Ronald Oshiba, SMEE team instructor.

Through this program, Indonesian NCOs exchanged their military knowledge and experiences with the instructors further strengthening their bond. They showed a tremendous amount of appreciation and respect for the program, the instructors and the culture.

“The impact that we leave behind will last a lifetime and the friendships we have created will be with us forever,” said Staszkow.
